Quite late on this...

But here is Kelvin, my main character. I've come to adore him. He is the sweetest fellow. Overweight, a little. Sarcastic, obviously. He loves his mom and his dog. I consider Kelvin to be biracial - that is, he is Hispanic (father) and white (mother).

So I went much easier on the black shading this page. It looks a lot cleaner, no? Part of my delay with this page was spending several days pondering page 2, and what it was I disliked about it. I really like the solid black shading, but I'm inexperienced with it and need to find the right balance. I think it's safe to say Page 2 was definitely too much.

Isn't it uncanny AND kind of adorable how pets (rats, dogs and cats at least) instantly grasp family hierarchy? They always KNOW who's the kid in the family even though we all must look similarly large for them after puberty.

I like Kelvin, he reminds me of a friend of mine! :) And I like new shading, I mean I really liked page 1 but I think it's smart to change shading depending on how each scene is lit, I need to do it more myself.

Keep up the good work!!!

@Oly-RRR: yes! All the dogs I've had have known me as the boss. They don't listen to a word my husband says. My cat, meanwhile, has attached himself to my son and even climbs the bunk bed ladder to be with him.

I'm really glad you like Kelvin! He is the best guy.

I've been struggling with the look for this. Page 2 has so much shading. It looks so busy. I don't know if its the shading or the many backgrounds. But I don't know how to do without the backgrounds... not on drawings like that, where they are not close up! I can hardly draw Elka growling at nothing, for instance. I think the combination of backgrounds plus heavy shading worked against me. I like this page much better. I'll probably keep experimenting with bg's.

Heh, sorry for the novel! I was so excited to have a comment. I didn't think anyone would even look at this until I was 10-20 pages in.

@scribblerian: You must be the one dishing out food to them! XD I'm not saying it's the only thing that matters for pets but they all KNOW who cooks. Your cat sounds adorable!!

Pff, haha, you say "backgrounds" like it's a bad thing - too many webcomics are full of talking heads and empty backgrounds, keep up what you're doing! But yeah, it's nice to experiment, I should do it more myself.

And you'd be surprised! :D I'm glad you were excited - these pages show time and effort put into them and deserve all the moral support! Besides I like when new comics pop up on SJ, there's a lot of quality stuff here but it can be hard to notice AMONG ALL THE ANIME AND SPRITES.

@Oly-RRR: He's a great cat! And it was a 100% vertical ladder. LOL! Which is why it has always impressed me.

I know what you mean about the backgrounds. Still, I can't shake my dislike for the page. Maybe I will redo the two bottom panels with the dog at some point. Those are the only ones I really have issue with. The shading is so messed up. Really, the dog's face should be shaded in panel 4, but I quickly realized that wouldn't be good with the solid black, so now it's just "off" looking.

Yes, so much anime! I'm always surprised how many I see directing us to read right to left. And so much BL. So much. Last I looked at the front page, 6 out of 10 had BL in the banner. I've found a few I like, but I am really surprised its such a BIG thing around here!

@scribblerian: I know that sort of bunk beds! Well, humans do it, no reason a cat can't do it, they are generally better at climbing.

I tend to advice against redrawing for the sake of improving art alone (I'm considering some redraws to edit some old writing though) but if something REALLY bugs you sometimes fixing it takes less time than feeling annoyed about the way it is, you know? :)

I think most art sites are whatever you make of them (I keep discovering comics like yours so this is how SJ is for me) but yeah, the front page is another story... I think SJ has a bit of unfortunate reputation with BL, which I find unfair, so I try to support comics I enjoy a bit more vocally (when I can, this fortnight sucked hence radio silence).
